The Biotech Data Tools Clinic

Select tools and design work practices that will allow your data team
to build a data moat that drives your science.

Worried that your data team won’t be ready for the next stage of your startup?

Their work feels scattered and piecemeal. Your data scientists and computational biologists are amazing analysts but not so good at organization and consistency. The only way to find past work is to ask the person who did it. You’re worried that if someone leaves, no one else will be able to reproduce what they’ve done.

There’s no view across all your data. Merging results from different datasets and analysis is a slow, manual process, if it’s possible at all. The only way to find data is to ask the right person. Sometimes it feels easier to just rerun the experiment from scratch.

What if you could be confident your data team was producing consistent, reproducible work?

Imagine if your team had detailed, documented practices and workflows that ensured anyone could immediately find any data and reproduce any analysis. Imagine having the confidence that when it’s time for the team to grow and the pace to quicken, your team and your infrastructure will be ready.

Get a customized plan from a trusted expert.

Get organized. You don’t need more software licenses or a bigger team. Getting your data under control starts with defining consistent, deliberate practices across all the work they do. Through the Data Tools Clinic, I’ll work with you to design the practices that work best for your team and your science. Why?

I believe that early stage biotech startups don’t need complicated tools to get their data under control. In fact, those tools can often get in the way. My goal is to help you find the simplest, cheapest approach that will ensure your team and your data are ready when you hit your next inflection point.

How it works

In this program, over a series of one-hour zoom sessions with different members of your team, we’ll dive into your current needs and concerns, define conventions and processes that will work for you, then identify technical gaps that need to be filled. After each session, I’ll deliver to you customized plans, designs and documentation with all the information you need for implementation, most of which can be done by your existing team.

Session Topics

The six sessions in this program are designed around the core areas where it’s important for data teams to develop consistent practices:

  1. Goals and Evaluation – What do you hope to get out of this program? Where is your team starting from? Who should be involved in each of the later sessions?
  2. Compute – How will your team run analysis and move data around? What software/languages/libraries will they use? How will they manage and access Cloud resources?
  3. Data – Where will your team store data for individual and shared use? How will they organize it and ensure it’s findable? How will they control access? How will they back it up?
  4. Version Control – How will your team track the analysis they do? How will they manage the custom tools they build? How will they ensure all their work is reproducible?
  5. Training – How will you ensure that current and future team members are familiar with these processes and conventions? How will you verify that they’re following them? How will you ensure the conventions evolve with the team’s needs?
  6. Implementation – What does each person on your team need to do for this plan to work? What are the technical gaps, and what software tools could fill them?

We’ll schedule these sessions for a timeline that works with your team, typically over 2-4 weeks.

Still Have questions?

What happens after I apply?

I want to make sure you’re at the right stage and size for this program. If you are, I’ll reach out with information about payment and scheduling. If not, we can schedule a meeting to discuss other options.

Is this just a trick to sell me more consulting services?

In the course of this clinic, we may identify places where you could use some outside help. My goal is to find you the right resources, whether or not that’s me. If you ever think I’m being too pushy or giving you advice that’s not in your best interest, you can invoke the 100% money back guarantee.

But my science/situation/approach is different!

That’s why this is a series of workshops instead of just a template. I customize the designs and plans to each team’s specific needs and preferences. I’ve seen a lot of different biotech data teams and I will do what it takes to make sure yours is taken care of.

Will you sign an NDA/CDA?

Yes. Most of the topics we’ll discuss won’t involve confidential or proprietary information, but to make sure your team doesn’t have to worry, I’ll sign a (reasonable) NDA or CDA.

Why can’t we just figure this out ourselves?

You probably could. But every week you spend on trial and error will cost you days when it’s time to clean up the mess. Teams that are building the tracks ahead of a speeding train don’t have time to step back and think about how they work. If you learn from my mistakes instead of your own, you can keep the train speeding along.

But I have more questions…

Send any and all questions to jesse@merelogic.net.

Who you’ll be working with

Hi, my name is Jesse Johnson and I’ve helped biotech startups of all sizes get their data under control so they can focus on the science. After learning the ins and outs of data infrastructure/architecture as a software engineer at Google, I’ve adapted this knowledge to biotech through roles at Verily Life Sciences, Sanofi, Cellarity and Dewpoint Therapeutics where I was VP of Data Science and Engineering. But as I pushed to make these data teams run smoothly and effectively, I realized that better software wasn’t enough. The real work is defining and adopting conventions and work practices that ensure your team’s work is consistent and reproducible. I’ve written extensively about this in my weekly newsletter, Scaling Biotech with more than 650 subscribers.

I’ve seen first hand what it looks like when data teams get bogged down in sloppy work practices and the wrong tools and infrastructure. And I’ve seen the difference it can make when you fix the situation. I want every biotech data team to work as efficiently and effectively as possible, including yours.

The sooner you start, the easier it will be.

The longer your team uses inconsistent conventions and inefficient processes, the more work it will be to go back and clean it up later. Every week you wait to get started creates hours, if not days, of additional work for your team. So don’t wait another minute. Apply today!
